HISTORY
With the building of our Clubhouse in 1989, one of the first activities
to be founded by the then Chairman, Patsy McCann, was the promotion of
set dancing within the Club. With this in mind he set up the first Ceilí
Committee which included Pat and Lily McKane, Margaret Kavanagh, Evelyn
Brereton, Carmel Jameson, Bridie Kelly, Celine McCann and Deirdre and
Denis McCarthy. Monday night classes began under dancing teacher Breda
Hession. A monthly ceilí was also held the third Saturday of every
month.
The ceilí classes and monthly ceilís still continue under the
guidance of Kay Treacy.
The Ceilí Section over the years have been involved in Scor na nOg
and the Senior Scor. It also was involved in Ceilí House which was
a great success, and Up For The Match prior to All-Ireland Finals. It
also has taken part in fund raising through set dancing for different
charities.
It is with deep regret and sorrow that our Ceilí Club lost one of
our founder members when Bridie Kelly went to her eternal reward on 2nd
June 1995. On 18th April 1998 we also lost another member of our Club
Chris Corrigan. We sincerely hope that Bridie and Chris are tapping out
a dance and tune in their heavenly home.
To Conclude it is our wish that set dancing and Irish music will forever
be heard from within the walls of St. Mark’s G.A.A. Club.
